Much Ado about Clouds.

Cirrocumulus or altocumulus? You decide.

My wife and I were in our car last weekend when we came across the most awesome display of clouds. She’s a cloud-lover. A regular student of clouds. She loves naming the different types of clouds. And me? It takes something special for me to get all gaga over clouds.

Adventures in Summer Canning.

A bevy of bell peppers from our garden.

I know.  Snooze.  Canning sounds boring.  But canning is one’s only option when the garden produces too many vegetables.  Sure, you can always give some away.  But I’ve always wanted to see if try my hand at this time-honored practice of preserving homegrown veggies. But can what? According to my trusty canning book (thanks Amazon!), …

How to Be a Cool Parent.

Hippyesque wristband.

It was Father’s Day in Folly Beach. The girls had been promising to buy me an “awesome” gift. But three days into the family vacation, we were hemorrhaging money like there was no tomorrow. What this dad needed was a cheapie gift. Something in the $5.99 range.

Forget Sharks. Beware of Seaweed!

Two sets of legs wash up on shore.

The beach was covered with rotting seaweed, and it was still washing up on shore. Watching it was amazing. Swimming in it was downright creepy!

Does Zucchini Bread Taste Like Zucchini?

The garden where it all began.

For that matter, does banana bread taste like bananas? And does carrott cake taste like carrotts?

A Clockwork Waller.

Class of 1980.

To the youngest employees of WYFF4, my high school prom pic is a laugh. But people my age who’ve seen this photo say I am a dead ringer for “Alex” in A Clockwork Orange. I can assure you I was not part of vicious teenage gang that committed random acts of brutality.

I Was Attacked by a Wild Chihuahua.

Oh, the horror!

I had just finished blowing the leaves from my gutters when I saw it dash across the yard.  A smallish brown creature with pointed ears, needle teeth and a bloated belly ran toward me at killing speed. As the beast approached, I noticed a bright yellow object in the death-grip of its mouth.  Perhaps a …

Run, Forrest, Run!

Nostrils flared, Waller moves into 4000th place.

I can’t believe I placed in the top ten in the 32nd Annual Reedy River Run.  I can’t believe it because it isn’t true.  We Wallers stayed near the back of the pack. The.  Whole.  Time. This was my first sojourn into the organized world of fitness.  It was my wife’s second time out.   This …

A Tennessee-Thing.

God's country.

It’s hard for me not to keep writing about Tennessee, that state where I was raised.   I was reminded again recently of just how beautiful Tennessee is, when I came across some photos my wife and I took. Below is an image I’ve seen my whole life.  An old barn in the field behind mom …
